I still have high hopes for 2013, in spite of a particularly inauspicious beginning to the year.
About 10 days ago, my husband and I both started feeling under the weather. Because he was smart enough to get a flu shot last fall, Nick’s symptoms wound up being much less severe – but I got progressively sicker until I finally threw in the towel and went to see the doctor last Thursday. Amazingly, my flu test came back negative, and I was given some antibiotics and sent home to rest and drink lots of fluids.
By Saturday, I was running higher fevers (102 at one point) even while alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofin and had developed a cough that hurt so bad I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to throw up or pass out or just cry. I went back to the doctor yesterday and… yes, it’s flu. Chest x-ray (clear, thankfully), steroid shot, breathing treatment, and prescriptions for Tamiflu and cough suppressant. The cough is still horrible and painful, but the fevers have broken and the body aches are significantly better – those steroid shots can be a real help in getting over the worst of a bad thing. The downside of steroids – at least in post-menopausal over-50 fat white women like me – is profuse sweating and a day or two of insomnia, so in between periods of lying in bed staring at the ceiling, I spent last night changing my pyjamas and lying on the couch watching movies on overnight TV.
I’m still weak, prone to dizziness, headachy, and coughing, so I’m not out of the woods yet, but I am feeling hopeful that I will be back on my feet in another couple of days. I apologize to everyone who was expecting something significant – or, well, anything at all – from me in the first two weeks of January, and will do my best to get caught up very, very soon.
In the meantime, my teammates over at Art Jewelry Elements have launched an earring challenge for 2013 – head on over and check it out!
